How does the Volvo XC40 Recharge compare to the Polestar 2?

The 2024 Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge are two of the most popular luxury electric SUVs on the market. Both offer a stylish design, a comfortable interior, and a long range.  

Performance

The XC40 Recharge RWD option is powered by a single electric motor that offers up to 248 horsepower and an EPA estimated range of 293 miles. You can upgrade to the dual motors powertrain that packs more power with AWD and up to 402 horsepower and an estimated range of 254 miles. Both versions of the XC40 Recharge charge in approximately 30 minutes on fast charge.

The base configuration of the Polestar 2 has a single motor as well and an output of up to 231 horsepower. It offers an EPA range of up to 270 miles and 476 hp. Additionally, it can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds (versus 4.6 seconds for the XC40 Recharge) and it has a regenerative braking system that allows you to stop without utilizing the brake pedal.

The Polestar 2 does have an advantage when it comes to the range but, the XC40 definitely takes the lead when it comes to in-home charging. The Volvo XC40 Recharge can be fully charged in seven to eight hours while the Polestar 2 takes eight hours with an at-home 11kW charger.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the single motor Polestar 2 offers a better mileage of 124 MPGe city and 106 MPGe highway while the Volvo XC40 Recharge offers up to 118 MPGe city and 95 MPGe on the highway.

Both have a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds. 

Interior

The XC40 Recharge includes five seats with premium synthetic material. There's enough compartment space to fill two suitcases at 20.4in wide, 12.2in high, and 29.5in long.

The Polestar 2 is also a 5-seater vehicle with cloth seats in the base version. These are upgraded to the premium synthetic material in higher trims.

Both have comparable interior features with heated front seats, keyless ignition, cruise control, and auto dimming rearview mirrors. 

Technology

The XC40 Recharge grants the driver control while the center display acts as a hub for connectivity, car settings, entertainment, and climate control. Essential driver information for constant updates are displayed on the 12-inch instrument plan. A 9-inch center display uses touch-screen tech to grant one control over the Volvo functions.

The Polestar 2 comes with a great deal of Google services and apps. You can pick up podcasts and songs via Spotify or go hands-free with Google Assistant. Pollutants and pollen are detected by the air quality system, utilizing a dedicated airborne particulate to make sure the air is clean. The Polestar 2 also comes equipped with multiple camera and radar units to anticipate potential brake, steering, or collision issues.

Is the Volvo XC40 Recharge more expensive as compared to the Polestar 2?

The Polestar 2 is less expensive with a starting MSRP of $51,300 while the XC40 Recharge starts at $53,745. However, you can upgrade to the top-level XC40 Recharge Ultimate Trim (starting at $60,695 MSRP) and still pay less than you would for the Polestar 2 Performance Plus (top-level trim) that has a starting MSRP of $64,400.
